What was your worst cooking experience?
That would have to be the time many, many years ago when I decided I wanted to make duck gumbo for my then-boyfriend and his family for dinner. With a frozen duck. That I bought on the way to their house. Yeah, we had duck gumbo... like, two days later.
You're trapped in a (temporarily) out of order elevator - who would you like to be trapped with?

My husband, obviously, because he'd be the only person who could possibly keep me from freaking the f*uck out.
And Jack Bauer.
What's your favorite Thanksgiving dish?

Nothing in this world beats my grandmother's dressing. We actually used to fight over the leftovers! I have tried, but I've never been able to duplicate it, and sadly, I don't know when I'm ever going to make it back to her place to spend the holiday...
What song best describes your current mood?

I was pretending to be floating strong / But I was sinking / Into still water
Eyes closed / All of the rest will flow
Then out of darkness / I found I could still feel / Something good / Out of the woods
Eyes closed / All of the rest will flow
One simple thing that / I never could see / But now I know
All of the rest will flow
Stay with me my angel / I found you / Now I don't feel low
All of the rest will flow
Eyes closed / All of the rest will flow
-- Porcupine Tree, "The Rest Will Flow"
My answer would have been very different yesterday.
What is your favorite scent?

Oh, wow... how to narrow it down to one thing? Cooking smells of all kinds, from onions/garlic/shallot softening in olive oil to bacon frying to soups simmering to bread baking to freshly shucked oysters to that first whiff of ripe tomato when you first cut into it... the back of my husband's neck (LUSH Sonic Death Monkey plus lemon shaving soap and balm from Art of Shaving plus plain old Dietschy goodness YUM), the tops of the cats' heads and their soft little bellies, my grandmother's house, cut grass, burning leaves, good red wine, the salt air on Cape Cod, bourbon, leather, Robert Hess' bitters... I should probably stop now...
What do you do to get rid of a cold or flu?

I am a firm believer in the power of soft flannel pajamas, polarfleece blankets, soft furry kitties, and a steamy bowl of chicken soup, just like my Grandma makes it, to cure whatever ails you.

First, there was Brandy the awesome wonderful dog, who was part of our family from the time I was a wee little tot until midway through my senior year of high school. I can't believe I don't have any photos scanned of him.
Then there was T.T. - which was how I said "kitty". I have no memory of this, but I think my mom said T.T. accidentally got run over by a car.
After T.T. came Quie - tiny little critter when we got him, and we thought he was a girl so named him Suzie Q... and when we found that he was a boy, that changed to Quie. Silly name, but he was an awesome cat, and died a week after Brandy did. They were buddies and we think he just died of a broken heart (Awwww). (I also, inexplicably, don't have any photos of him online.)
Also when I was a kid, my dad brought home puppies (Samson and Sheba) and a Norwegian Dwarf rabbit (Budgie), and they lived with us for a brief period of time before going on to other homes - as I recall, Sam lived with my dad's cousin's family and had a long, happy life; Sheba was admitted to Leader Dog school; Budgie went back to the person who had given him to my dad - a coworker who bred the rabbits.
When I was about 10 years old, I got the first pet that was really MINE. That would be Cindy, also known as Cinders. Teeny tiny and fiesty as all get out. She lived to the ripe old age of 19, and passed away after a short but horrible illness, at home. You can't imagine how I cried.
My ex-husband and I had two cats together - Riley and Nikko - and they still live with him in Michigan. Riley we adopted soon after we moved in together, probably in '97 or '98, and we adopted Nikko when he was 11 years old, a few months after Cinders died. Riley was lonely and needed a companion, and I fell in love with Nikko at first sight at an adoption fair. Leaving them behind when we split and I moved away was extremely difficult, but it was the right decision and the best thing for them. But I still miss them, and think of them often.
So that brings us to the present, and my two little superstars, Kali and Dubya. They're 5. They totally rock my world.
