I've been a music lover for as long as I can remember. Our home was always filled with it, and I began to develop my own musical tastes at a very young age, which was as much a curse as a blessing - few of the bands I was listening to in my teenage years were playing at venues I could actually get into (if they were even still together).
I made up for that in college, when I landed at U of M in Dearborn and joined the staff of the radio station there. I loved being exposed to so much great new stuff, discovering artists making music that didn't sound like anything I had heard before (I'm looking at you, My Bloody Valentine), music that inspired me, moved me. I saw more shows than I can even remember, got to meet a bunch of the artists who made the music, came to NYC for the first time (to attend CMJ), and even began to seriously consider a career in the music industry.
Music was such a major part of my life then, that it is so strange to me that I keep falling away from it for long periods of time. When I lived in Boston, I first heard a band called Porcupine Tree, and immediately fell in love with them. In Absentia was (and is) a fantastic piece of work, complex and dark and beautiful - kind of like the aural equivalent of drinking a really good red wine. There are lots of layers there. I could listen to that album over and over and never get tired of it, so it was startling to me to realize the other day that their follow-up album, Deadwing, was released in March of 2005, and that I had completely spaced on getting it. (I did buy it on iTunes the other night and OHMYGOD. I am mad that I deprived myself of this awesomeness for a year and a half. Never again.)
I think part of the problem is that since Mike and I have been together, I've relied more on him to provide our soundtrack - he's pretty good about checking out new artists, and he has a lot of older stuff which is completely new to me. But there's as much divergence as overlap in our musical tastes, and I want to find some music that I'll love even if Mike doesn't. I don't care about genres - I'm as big a fan of a good three-chord pop song or something that straight-out makes me want to shake my ass as I am the quirky or arty or complex stuff. An interesting voice is a plus; a voice that makes my girly parts tingle is even better. Also, if the song has cello in it somewhere, I will probably like it (my dear, departed Sea Ray, I'm looking at you).
I've got this iPod now, and I want to fill it up with something other than just my old reliable vintage 80s and 90s tunes. I want to catch up with old favorites and find some new stuff that makes me go WOW. I'll give pretty much anything a try.
So, my friends, what are you listening to? Give me some leads.
Okay, am I losing my mind, or did I just *really* hear someone covering Duran Duran's "The Chaffeur" when I was in the bookstore downstairs a few minutes ago...?
