I just realized that Thanksgiving is just over two weeks away, and I haven't even begun to plan for it.
I swear this has been the most unorganized, disconnected, completely chaotic couple of months ever.
He's got an oogey tummy today. Actually, Kali's the only member of the Dietschyblossom family who isn't experiencing a major bout of The Yuck right now.
The vet said to just keep an eye on him, and if he's still having issues tomorrow, to call and make an appointment. He's comfortble enough now that he's napping, but he had a really bad morning.
Poor little squid.
One unfortunate side effect of all of the renovations being done to our place and to the homes on either side of ours is that all of the little creepy crawlies that you tend to find in buildings of a certain age in big cities have been uprooted from the little cracks and spaces where they used to reside, and are now looking for new places to be. I'm sure the pile of rotting wood ripped from the exterior of the house which is sitting in the basement studio isn't helping matters... I shudder to think what might be slithering around in there.
Anyway, I'm going through a period of poor sleep and downright insomnia again, so I've been awake well past my normal bedtime and/or up before the sun for the last few nights. I woke at about 5 a.m. on Sunday, stumbled to the bathroom and turned on the light to discover a massive, shiny black bug zipping around on the tile floor. I immediately retreated to the sofa, pulled my legs up underneath me and "ew! ew! ewwwwwww!"-ed" for a good five minutes, trying to regain my composure. Kali, the intrepid hunter, was so startled by the size of the damn thing when she went to investigate that she actually HID BEHIND THE BATHROOM DOOR and "mew! mew! MEW!"-ed rather than locking on the target and destroying it as is her normal way. (Dub just stared, sleepy and confused.) Our combined "ew!"s and "mew!"s woke Mike up, and he disposed of the creature swiftly, then returned to bed. My hero.
Last night, things got worse. Both Dub and Kali have been very interested in the nooks and crannies around the stove and cabinets for the last few days, and I suspected we might have a mouse. My suspicions were, unfortunately, confirmed, as I sat on the sofa watching Iron Chef America at about 1 a.m. and witnessed a furry little brown critter skittering across the backsplash. HORRIFYING. Dub, who was firmly planted on the kitchen rug, his head as close to the crack between the stove and the cupboard as he could get it, missed the whole thing. I didn't want to wake Mike (again), and I'll be damned if I was going to try to catch the thing myself, so I just tried to forget about the whole thing - went into the bedroom and burrowed under the covers, making sure no skin was exposed.
It's probably pointless to try to get rid of these critters while work continues on our place, but I'm seriously more than a little freaked out about sharing living space with them. I'm also not keen on the idea of coming home to mousie guts on the floor, or even worse being witness to "mew mew CRUNCH."
